Q&A: Does milk need to be from a halal-certified source?

Question from reader Zahira: Salam sis, I attended your reading the labels class and found it to be really useful and knowledgeable. I have some questions if you don’t mind. If the ingredient is milk (e.g. goat’s milk, cow’s milk), does it need to be from a halal source or just milk in general is fine? I’ve attached a copy of the ingredient list and logo for your reference. Looking forward to your reply. Thanks, Zahira

Answer:- Salaam Sis Zahira. Milk in general is fine, because its occurrence is pure by nature. The only worry if they indicate ‘sow milk’ which is then milk taken from a pig, then it is not alright. However, since the bulk of milk production in the world is from cow / sheep / goat, then we don’t have reason to doubt, unless otherwise indicated that the milk is ‘sow milk’. Please take what I say as more of a guideline, and then decide for yourself it is okay for you, rather than taking what I say as a black and white yes/no situation okay? Waalaikumslm, Jumaiyah

halalfoodhunt.com is a website listing verified Muslim-owned or Halal Certified food businesses. We started out educating halal foodies on how to know if a food is halal or not when there are no halal certifications. As we received so many enquiries on whether a food business is halal or not, we created halalfoodhunt.com, while letting halal foodies know about the myriad of options open to them! It is a website created and self-funded by local Singaporean Muslims for the Singaporean Muslim community.

What’s Not Halal About… Italian Food?

“What's not halal about Italian food? It’s just pizza, pasta and a lot of tomato sauce!”

Like Wolfgang Puck says, Italian food is really about good quality ingredients with nothing fancy. The holy trinity of Italian food is essentially tomatoes, olive oil and basil. I mean, it all comes from vegetable sources so what can possibly be non-halal about that?
